Case Study: Independent Electricity System Operator achieves enhanced grid resiliency and 4 MW/16 MWh energy storage with Ameresco

A Ameresco Case Study

Preview of the Independent Electricity System Operator Case Study

Greater Toronto Area’s Largest Energy Storage System Addresses Resiliency

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) needed to improve grid resiliency, time-shift energy, and support increasing renewable integration while accessing ancillary services. Ameresco was engaged to deliver battery energy storage technology and services—including design-build, Energy as a Service, and operations and maintenance—to meet these challenges.

Ameresco designed, built, owns and operates two 2 MW, four-hour battery energy storage systems on the Newmarket–Tay distribution grid (4 MW total, 16 MWh) under a 10‑year Energy Storage Facility Agreement (infrastructure investment $14.6M CAD, agreement secured in 2015). Ameresco’s systems provide time-shifting of energy, ancillary services, and improved grid reliability and stability while enabling IESO market participation and delivering measurable capacity and operational benefits.
