Council Reduces Carbon Emissions and Energy Costs with Conservation Measures

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council sought to modernize aging estate infrastructure, improve schools and community buildings, and meet the Welsh public sector target of net zero by 2030. To achieve these aims the Council engaged Ameresco to deliver energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions across 31 sites (72,966 m²) under a £1.09 million project, using measures such as LED lighting and lighting controls, building management and optimisation, time clocks, solar PV and building fabric improvements.

Ameresco carried out detailed site surveys and developed an Investment Grade Proposal, then implemented seven energy conservation measures including 30 LED lighting upgrades, nine solar PV systems (200.3 kWp), smart heating and hot water controls and loft insulation. The Ameresco programme delivered measurable results: an annual CO2 reduction of 251 tonnes, guaranteed energy and maintenance cost savings via the REFIT Cymru framework, improved comfort and extended equipment life, and optimized use of Council funding.
