A Ameresco Case Study
The City of West Richland, WA engaged Ameresco to modernize its 1,097 city-owned high-pressure sodium (HPS) street lights and add wireless controls to reduce energy and maintenance costs, improve illumination and cut greenhouse gas emissions. The project scope included LED street lights and a wireless lighting control system to address the city’s operational and sustainability goals.
Ameresco completed a budget-neutral retrofit converting 1,097 HPS fixtures to high-performance LED luminaires and installing a wireless control platform for remote monitoring and dimming. The upgrade is projected to reduce annual electricity consumption by 61% (about $67,000 in energy cost savings per year), lower the city’s average cost per kWh by more than 26% by enabling a consumption-based tariff, and avoid roughly 527,481 lbs of CO2 annually, with additional 10–20% savings possible from dimming strategies.
