Case Study: City of Phoenix achieves large-scale biogas-to-RNG conversion and major CO2 reductions with Ameresco

A Ameresco Case Study

Preview of the City of Phoenix Case Study

City of Phoenix’s 91st Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant

The City of Phoenix needed a way to manage and monetize raw biogas from its 91st Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant while meeting regional sustainability and renewable energy goals. Ameresco was selected to provide a design-build, own, operate, and maintain (DBOOM) biogas-to-renewable natural gas (RNG) solution under a 20-year biogas purchase and site lease agreement.

Ameresco designed and built a ~1-acre RNG facility and 3-mile pipeline connecting to an interstate line, enabling processing of raw biogas at 3,250 scfm and annual injection of 693,500 DTH of RNG sold as vehicle fuel. Ameresco’s project delivers royalty payments, O&M savings for the plant, and a CO2 reduction of 44,671 metric tons per year (equivalent to roughly 70,452 cars removed from the road), demonstrating measurable economic and environmental impact.
