A Ameresco Case Study
The City of Miami Beach engaged Ameresco to tackle rising energy costs and aging building systems across 50 city facilities (approximately 2.6 million sq. ft.). Using an Energy Savings Performance Contract and the Florida State Term Contract selection process, the $14.1 million program aimed to reduce energy use, lower operating and maintenance costs, and finance capital improvements—addressing specific issues such as aging chillers at City Hall and the need for longer‑term sustainable solutions.
Ameresco designed, engineered and implemented six major energy conservation measures including comprehensive lighting and controls, HVAC upgrades and a citywide EMS, water‑conservation fixtures, energy‑efficient transformers, a geothermal district cooling system (including a geothermal plant at Police Headquarters), and a chilled‑water loop from the Convention Center to City Hall; Ameresco also secured grant funding and provided staff training. The project produced $1,210,840 in annual energy savings that the City reinvested in infrastructure, reduced the City’s carbon footprint (equivalent to removing 1,321 cars, planting 1,639 acres of trees, or powering over 1,000 homes), and improved building comfort and operational efficiency.
