City of Baltimore - Customer Case Study

The City of Baltimore sought to reduce landfill methane emissions from its Quarantine Road Landfill while securing reliable, cost‑stable energy for the adjacent U.S. Coast Guard Yard. Ameresco was engaged to provide a landfill‑gas‑to‑energy solution, installing a Renewable Energy Center (REC) and related LFG processing and pipeline systems under an intergovernmental agreement.

Ameresco designed, built, financed and will operate the REC — including a 1.5‑mile LFG pipeline, LFG conditioning system, four 1 MW Jenbacher LFG engines with heat‑recovery steam generators, substation and boiler retrofits — under a $41 million contract. The project delivers 20–30% energy and operational savings, improves energy security and long‑term price stability, and reduces greenhouse gases equivalent to removing 33,000 cars from the road and powering more than 2,500 homes; it is also the largest Energy Savings Performance Contract in Coast Guard history.
