City of Alton, Il and Ameresco Move Forward on 5mw Solar Project

The City of Alton faced the dual challenge of finding a productive use for a closed municipal landfill site while also pursuing its clean energy and sustainability goals. To address this, the city partnered with Ameresco to develop a large-scale solar energy project on the brownfield site.

Ameresco installed a 5 MWAC solar array on the former landfill. This solution is expected to generate approximately 10,000 MWh of electricity annually, reducing the city's carbon footprint by 7,000 tons per year. Over the project's 30-year lifespan, the city is projected to receive approximately $1 million in revenue from the clean energy generation.
