Chicago Transit Authority - Customer Case Study

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), which operates the nation’s second-largest public transit system and spends over $100 million annually on energy, needed greater cost stability and value for its electricity, natural gas and diesel procurements. To meet those goals, CTA selected Ameresco as its energy services partner for supply management, price risk management, energy procurement and related services.

Ameresco designed a custom RFP and competitive bidding process—structuring load “tranches,” a tailored supply contract, and an innovative gas-storage relinquishment approach so CTA pays only for consumed gas while suppliers can utilize storage in exchange for discounts. The result: nearly $10 million per year saved versus the prior electric contract, over $19.7 million in total energy cost reductions, and additional gas value exceeding $100,000 per year, reflecting Ameresco’s measurable impact on CTA’s $100M annual energy spend.
