A Ameresco Case Study
Becromal of America, a major manufacturer of aluminum foils for electrolytic capacitors, needed a reliable, on-site source of process steam and power to support its electrochemical foil processing. Ameresco was engaged on a design/build contract to deliver a biomass-based cogeneration solution that would supply the plant with renewable steam and electrical capacity.
Ameresco engineered, fabricated, installed and commissioned a wood gasification cogeneration plant that includes a 100 million BTU fluidized-bed biomass gasifier, a low-BTU gasified boiler producing steam at 600 psig and 750°F, and a 7.5 MW condensing steam turbine with 150 psig and 80 psig extraction ports for process steam. Ameresco also designed and installed 5,460 feet of direct-buried, high-pressure steam distribution (300 psig, 500°F), integrated multi-vendor PLC and control systems, and performed startup and commissioning—delivering 7.5 MW of on-site renewable energy and direct steam capacity to the Becromal facility.
