A Ameresco Case Study

Preview of the City of Smithville Case Study

After Critical Infrastructure Improvements, City of Smithville Now Saves $229,697 Annually

The City of Smithville, TX — which operates its own water, sewer and electric utilities — faced aging meters, inefficient lighting and operational challenges that were limiting revenue and increasing O&M costs. To modernize its infrastructure and improve billing accuracy, the City partnered with Ameresco to deploy AMI, water and electric meter upgrades, LED street and facility lighting, and related energy-efficiency measures under an energy savings performance contract.

Ameresco implemented an AMI wireless mesh network, replaced 1,745 water meters and 2,105 electric meters (integrated into AMI), retrofitted 786 light fixtures with 150 lighting controls, and upgraded 578 street lights to LED. The $2.6M project reduced annual energy consumption by 554,622 kWh and delivers $229,697 in annual energy savings, while automating meter reading, improving meter accuracy, increasing utility revenue, lowering O&M costs and reducing billing errors and service calls.
