University College London achieves 10x faster simulations with AMC Bridge

The Synaptic Imaging Laboratory at University College London (UCL) needed to move beyond the limitations of its MATLAB-based brain circuit simulation. The existing program could not handle more realistic data sets or perform the necessary distributed computing, and the lab lacked the in-house expertise to develop a more powerful solution. UCL engaged software development vendor AMC Bridge to create a new, high-performance simulation environment.

AMC Bridge re-engineered the application using optimized C++ code, which immediately resulted in a 200-300% performance improvement. The new implementation was also designed for distributed computing, and when run on multi-core hardware, it achieved an additional 250% performance boost. Overall, AMC Bridge delivered a solution that provided an approximate 10-fold performance gain, meeting all technical and financial constraints and leading UCL to plan future projects with the vendor.
