Willbros Group - Customer Case Study

Willbros Group, a Houston-based specialty energy infrastructure contractor serving oil, gas, refinery, petrochemical, and power clients, faced a major IT challenge: a physically distributed server environment across four data centers and dozens of offices that limited agility in a cyclical market. The company routinely overprovisioned capacity by about 20% and struggled to provision and scale servers quickly, distracting IT from supporting Willbros’ core business of building energy assets.

Willbros moved its business applications to Amazon Web Services, using EC2 to run solutions like Integra Link, MDS, PPRO, and Microsoft workloads, and to prototype new products rapidly. The cloud cut project execution time by more than 80% (from about six months to one month), enabled precise cost reporting and on-demand scaling (including downward elasticity), reduced total cost of ownership, and let Willbros focus on customer needs rather than managing data centers.
