A Amazon Web Services Case Study
WeTransfer is a simple, registration-free file-transfer service that needed enterprise-grade availability and predictable scalability to deliver an “effortless” customer experience. The core challenge was ensuring consistent, high-performance service through daily traffic peaks without heavy operational overhead or downtime during feature launches.
WeTransfer migrated to AWS in 2011 and built its platform on Amazon S3, CloudFront, EC2 Auto Scaling, and Multi‑AZ RDS with read replicas, using Reserved Instances to cut costs and AWS Enterprise Support (including a dedicated TAM) for planning and fast incident response. The result: the service reliably handles more than 40 million users and over 1 billion file transfers per month (peaks of ~15 GB/s and ~150 instances), saved nearly $1 million since 2015 on infrastructure, and can scale and roll out features with minimal ops headcount and downtime.
