A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Vivino is the world’s largest wine app and community—launched in 2010, it catalogs over 10 million wines and serves some 22 million users who can scan labels to get prices, ratings, and purchase options. Rapid growth (from 12.5M to 22M users in 2016 and projected further increases) created a need for a scalable, automated infrastructure to deliver new features quickly and to absorb large weekly and seasonal spikes (up to a 300% traffic surge over the holidays).
Vivino built on AWS—using Auto Scaling with EC2, S3 and CloudFront for scanner data, RDS for MySQL, SES/SNS for promotions, and ElastiCache for caching (with Redshift exploration underway). The result: automatic handling of 300% holiday traffic, faster continuous deployment and feature delivery (ElastiCache avoided 100+ hours of work), easier global expansion into new markets, and the ability to send promotions to millions of users in seconds (push campaigns drove about 85% of 2016 revenue).
