Vancouver International Airport - Customer Case Study

Innovative Travel Solutions (ITS) is a business unit of Vancouver International Airport (YVR) that develops and operates BORDERXPRESS self‑service border‑control kiosks—more than 1,200 kiosks that have helped over 100 million passengers at airports across Canada, the U.S., the Caribbean, and the Pacific. ITS originally ran its central application from two on‑premises data centers but needed greater agility to scale to new airports, stronger security to protect sensitive data, and improved disaster‑recovery capabilities.

ITS partnered with TriNimbus to migrate to Amazon Web Services, deploying EC2 instances with Elastic Load Balancing, multi‑Availability‑Zone RDS, S3 backups, CloudWatch monitoring, CloudFormation templates, and geographically separate regions for DR. The move delivered virtually 24/7 uptime, the security assurances required by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, zero‑downtime updates, rapid scaling for peak loads, and production use across 34 airports processing more than 100 million travelers.
