United Daily News Group, one of Taiwan’s largest media organizations, launched udn tv in 2010 to offer online news video to readers across web and mobile devices. Faced with the need to deliver high-definition video reliably to a fragmented, multi-screen audience while avoiding prohibitive capital and bandwidth costs for on-premises infrastructure, the company needed a flexible, cost-effective platform that could scale quickly.

United Daily News chose AWS and, in about two months, deployed a streaming architecture using EC2, S3, CloudFront, RDS, ElastiCache and OpsWorks to host, store, and deliver video content. The solution supported a tenfold increase in viewers with no downtime, handled demand peaks, reduced time-to-market for new apps, and enabled a cost-effective multi-screen strategy while storing and processing roughly 1.5 TB of video content.
