UK Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency Cuts Costs 42%, Streamlines Innovation on AWS

The UK Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) needed to move beyond an outdated on-premises environment that was costly to maintain, hard to scale, and slowed innovation. As the agency responsible for driver and vehicle safety in Great Britain, DVSA turned to Amazon Web Services and began an incremental migration in 2015, using services such as Amazon EC2 and Amazon RDS to modernize its infrastructure.

Amazon Web Services helped DVSA adopt managed and serverless capabilities, including Amazon EC2 Spot Instances and AWS Lambda, to scale more flexibly, reduce administrative overhead, and deploy new services faster. The results included a 42% reduction in hosting costs for its Vehicle Operator Licensing service, quicker delivery of critical services during the COVID-19 pandemic, and improved agility, security, and compliance.
