Ubisoft Provides Seamless, Scalable Multiplayer Gaming Experience Using AWS

Ubisoft, the maker of franchises like Watch Dogs, needed a more reliable, scalable way to run its Storm multiplayer relay platform: peer‑to‑peer connections and player public IPs were causing problems, holiday traffic spikes overwhelmed their old setup, and a small team of three developers wanted to focus on features rather than backend operations.

Ubisoft migrated Storm to AWS using EC2, Amazon ECS, Auto Scaling, and ElastiCache to automate container orchestration and scaling. The move let them spin up and manage relay capacity automatically—peaking at 120 servers to route 70 TB of data in 20 days—support around 80,000 players, and deploy global updates in under 30 minutes, improving agility and freeing the team to build new features.
