Trendsmap.com is a real-time Twitter trends service built by Melbourne-based Stateless Systems (12 developers). The team needed a platform that let them spin up multiple instances quickly and deploy easily to handle rapidly growing volumes of Twitter data.

They built Trendsmap entirely on AWS, using EC2 (with EBS storage), a custom parallel processing pipeline, four database servers and 20+ instances, plus Spot Instances, Elastic IPs and Elastic Load Balancing to manage cost, flexibility and uptime. As a result, the site scaled from processing about 4 million tweets per day to over 40 million, with the ability to quickly expand compute and storage as demand grew.
