Thorn collaborates with Amazon Rekognition to help fight child sexual abuse and trafficking

Thorn is a nonprofit that builds technology to stop the spread of child sexual abuse material and combat child trafficking. Facing an immense volume of online abuse — roughly 150,000 domestic child sex trafficking ads posted each day — investigators needed faster, more efficient ways to sift through images and video to identify and recover victims.

Thorn partnered with AWS and uses Amazon Rekognition to power its Spotlight tool, which analyzes image and video content, extracts critical information from ads, and streamlines case creation for investigators. The solution has helped identify 5,894 child sex trafficking victims, led to the rescue of 103 children whose abuse was recorded and distributed, and produced a 65% reduction in investigation time, enabling teams to find victims faster.
