The GPT Group is one of Australia’s largest diversified property companies, managing $15.2 billion in assets across retail, office, logistics and business parks. Facing the need to cut costs by 20% and extract more value from IT, GPT sought to rationalize a costly two-site hosted data center environment while ensuring mission‑critical systems (including an SAP ECC accounting system) kept the same performance and met rigorous security requirements.

GPT migrated almost its entire data center to AWS—about 70% as a lift‑and‑shift and 30% rebuilt (notably SAP and Active Directory)—using 112 EC2 instances, 37.5 TB of EBS storage and AWS Direct Connect. The move delivered major benefits: up to 60% hourly cost savings, about 25% better operating expenditure versus budget, expected payback in under 12 months, equivalent application performance, stronger security posture, faster provisioning, and a platform primed for further automation and optimization.
