The Globe and Mail - Customer Case Study

The Globe and Mail, Canada’s most‑read newspaper with a national digital readership of 4.7 million, wanted a mobile app that serves personalized article recommendations based on reading history, location, device and similar users. Off‑the‑shelf products couldn’t deliver the advanced customization and speed the paper needed, and an on‑premises build would have been slower and less flexible.

Partnering with AWS and ClearScale, The Globe built a custom recommendation engine on AWS (using services such as Kinesis, DynamoDB, EMR, S3 and CloudFormation) with automated DevOps deployment. The solution went from prototype to production in three months, supports rapid algorithm testing, and delivered about a 25% lift in click‑throughs for personalized content—providing scalable, cost‑effective increases in reader engagement.
