The BBC Preserves 100 Years of History Using Amazon S3

BBC needed a practical way to migrate and preserve a century’s worth of archive content, moving enormous volumes of media data from legacy tape-based storage to the cloud. Working with Amazon Web Services and its AWS Direct Connect infrastructure, the BBC set out to improve accessibility while reducing the cost and complexity of managing its archive.

Amazon Web Services helped the BBC migrate most of its archive to Amazon S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval, alongside Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering for data with different access needs. The BBC migrated up to 120 TB per day and moved 25 PB to the cloud in 10 months, retiring one legacy media repository and half of the archive’s physical infrastructure while gaining faster retrieval and more flexible storage costs.
