Texas State Library and Archives Commission Turns to the Cloud to Launch Texas Digital Archive

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) needed to preserve and provide public access to its first major transfer of electronic government records: roughly 7 TB of Governor Rick Perry’s files plus 18 TB of digitized state senate audio. With a one-year deadline, no existing digital preservation system, high local server costs, and strict state encryption and compliance requirements, TSLAC faced an urgent challenge to securely store, manage, and share these historically important records.

TSLAC selected Preservica hosted on AWS GovCloud (US) to meet standards-based preservation, encryption in transit and at rest, geographic dispersal of copies, and minimal onsite IT overhead. The cloud deployment enabled secure internal and public access and allowed TSLAC to launch the Texas Digital Archive on schedule; the solution proved scalable, compliant, and cost-effective, and TSLAC has shared its RFP with other states as a model.
