A Amazon Web Services Case Study
TAOlight (TAO), founded in 2004 in Hong Kong, designs and manufactures smart lighting (brands iDual and WiZ) and needed a scalable, secure backend to support WiZ’s app- and voice-controlled IoT features. The company rejected an on-premises approach because it wanted cloud-based processing to protect customer data, enable continuous device connectivity and analytics, and reduce infrastructure development time and costs.
TAO chose AWS for its breadth of services and cost-effectiveness, building the WiZ backend in an Amazon VPC using EC2 proxy and application servers, ElastiCache, Amazon Aurora (RDS), QuickSight analytics, and Lambda/Alexa for Echo voice control. The move increased infrastructure development speed by 62%, avoided on-premises complexity, lowered labor and IT production costs (about a 60% reduction by using t2.medium instances with Aurora), and enabled remote app and voice control plus analytics-driven product insights.
