Tadaa, from Hamburg-based menschmaschine Publishing, is an iPhone camera app that offers HD photo effects, 25 real-time filters, sharing, and a global photography network. Faced with the need to deliver a rich mobile experience quickly without on-premises infrastructure or dedicated system-administration staff, the small team sought a cloud provider with global reach, flexible pricing, managed services, and easy scalability.

The team deployed on AWS—using EC2, S3, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, EMR, CloudSearch, CloudFront, and CloudWatch—and built a message-based backend to glue asynchronous services together and scale iteratively across regions. The result: they supported nearly 500,000 new users in under a week, quadrupled stored photos in five days, processed thousands of messages per second and managed massive growth with a five-person team, all without hiring additional operations staff.
