Athenahealth, a healthcare technology company, needed to strengthen its cloud security posture while reducing the high costs of inspecting network traffic across 120 accounts. Using Amazon Web Services services such as AWS Network Firewall, AWS Transit Gateway, AWS Resource Access Manager, AWS Direct Connect, and AWS CloudFormation, the company set out to automate and centralize security in the cloud.

Amazon Web Services helped athenahealth redesign its security architecture around a centralized deployment model, automatically distributing firewall policies and inspecting egress traffic at scale. The result was a 95% reduction in inspection costs, faster rollout of network changes, and a smaller operational burden for engineers, with a team of just eight people implementing the new design without disruption.
