Sonico - Customer Case Study

Sonico is a Buenos Aires–based social network founded in 2007 with more than 48 million registered users (85% in Latin America). Heavy photo use and limited technical staff left Sonico managing images across 25+ hosted servers; the company wanted to offload content to reduce costs, improve backup and scalability, and faced the additional challenge of migrating over 1 billion images with no out‑of‑the‑box solution for acceptable upload performance.

Sonico moved image upload, processing, and storage to AWS over four months, using multiple Amazon EC2 instances (Linux/Apache) to handle uploads and processing and Amazon S3 for storage, with SQS and MySQL on EC2 for other services. The migration cut costs by about 70%, improved redundancy and scalability, and eliminated the need to provision and finance new storage servers.
