Slalom - Customer Case Study

Slalom Consulting, a Seattle‑based firm of more than 2,500 consultants with local offices in 16 North American cities, provides program management, software development and enterprise solutions. Its consultants rely on Microsoft SharePoint (integrated with NewsGator) for document sharing and knowledge exchange, but rapid growth — daily users rose from about 300 to 1,600 and content topped 700 GB — strained their SharePoint 2010 farm and drove the need to upgrade to SharePoint 2013.

Slalom migrated roughly 1,300 sites to AWS, deploying a SharePoint 2013 farm in an Amazon VPC using EC2 instances for web front ends, application and Office Web Apps servers, and SQL Server, with multiple site‑to‑site VPNs connecting cloud and on‑premises environments. The transition was seamless for users, enabled OneDrive and PowerPivot browser capabilities, scaled the farm from two to five instances with nearly double the RAM/CPU, and reduced infrastructure costs by about 14%.
