SkyAlert Helps Save Lives from Natural Disasters Using AWS Solutions

SkyAlert, a Mexico-based earthquake warning company, needed a faster, more scalable way to deliver life-saving alerts during natural disasters. Its previous system could take up to 20 minutes to send messages and required costly always-on infrastructure, making it difficult to scale quickly and efficiently. SkyAlert turned to Amazon Web Services, using cloud-based services such as Lambda and Fargate to modernize its alerting platform.

With Amazon Web Services, SkyAlert built a system that can scale in seconds, cutting alert delivery time to as little as 8 seconds and delivering nearly 2 million notifications during the June 2020 earthquake. The new setup reduced downtime from 40–50 minutes to none, lowered infrastructure needs from 20 machines to as few as 7, and cut monthly costs from $7,000 to $4,000 while improving performance, user experience, and tracking capabilities.
