A Amazon Web Services Case Study
SKIDATA, an Austrian provider of mass-access and parking-management solutions with 10,000 installations in over 100 countries (including Schiphol and Nürburgring), needed to centralize and scale a growing suite of internet-based add-on services. Expansion into regions such as the US and Australia exposed capacity and latency limits of its Austrian data center—some systems required sub-100 ms response times—and building proprietary data centers was not a viable option.
SKIDATA moved its infrastructure to Amazon Web Services, using RDS (Postgres/Oracle), EC2, Elastic Load Balancing, S3 and VPC to achieve geographic redundancy, low latency and elastic scalability. The change cut deployment time from months to about a week, grew add-on services from 1 to 11 and EC2 instances from 1 to ~60, and made AWS the standard platform for new markets while enabling centralized management and rapid expansion.
