Shippable is a hosted CI/CD platform that automates building, testing, and deploying containerized applications from repositories like GitHub and Bitbucket. The company ran a microservices architecture on Dockerized Amazon EC2 instances with a custom cluster manager and hardcoded service discovery, which forced engineers to spend 60–80% of their time on infrastructure, container orchestration, and monitoring instead of product features.

Shippable moved its services to Amazon ECS (using ELBs, CloudWatch, and Amazon ECR for images) so each microservice is an ECS service managed by the scheduler and logged centrally.
