A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Segment, a San Francisco–based customer data platform used by companies from startups to enterprises (including Nokia, Conde Nast, and Salesforce Foundation), collects customer data for analytics and marketing. After moving apps to Docker for consistency, Segment still faced manual, error-prone provisioning and configuration drift and needed a scalable, production-ready way to schedule and manage containers that integrated with their existing AWS stack.
Segment adopted Amazon EC2 Container Service (ECS), running different services on separate ECS clusters with task definitions, Elastic Load Balancing and Route 53 for service discovery, and Datadog for metrics. ECS automated container placement across Availability Zones, streamlined deployments and updates, improved availability, and let developers focus on building features instead of managing provisioning and uptime.
