A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Rovio Entertainment, creator of the Angry Birds franchise, operates the Hatch platform to support its global portfolio of games and apps. Faced with massive and unpredictable traffic, a small operations team needed a reliable, secure, and highly automated backend that ensured worldwide availability and let game developers focus on gameplay instead of infrastructure.
Rovio built Hatch on AWS—using EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, IAM, Elastic Transcoder, EMR, and Redshift—to enable automated, on‑demand scaling and enterprise‑grade security. The platform sustained major launches (10 million users in three days, ~120,000 new users/hour), maintained strong uptime, and processed about three billion analytics events per day to speed KPIs and improve game performance.
