Roche Accelerates Personalized Healthcare R&D While Reducing Costs Using AWS HealthOmics

Roche, a healthcare and life sciences company focused on personalized medicine, needed to speed up genomics research while lowering the cost and complexity of its R&D pipelines. After launching production workflows on Amazon Web Services, Roche adopted AWS HealthOmics with Nextflow and WDL to run whole-genome sequencing and other bioinformatics workloads more efficiently in the cloud.

Using Amazon Web Services and AWS HealthOmics, Roche automated compute selection, enabled secure global access, and let researchers run multiple projects in parallel without managing underlying infrastructure. The results were significant: analysis time dropped by up to 80%, cancer research analysis time fell from 1 year to 3 months, compute costs were reduced by 40%, and storage costs were cut by 90% with Amazon S3.
