A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Reckon, a Sydney-based accounting-software provider founded in 1987, offers desktop and hosted solutions including Reckon Accounts Hosted (27,000 users) and the cloud-native Reckon One. Faced with on-premises servers that created heavy administrative overhead, constrained scalability and peak-capacity costs, and limited product update frequency (only two releases a year), Reckon needed a platform that could deliver near‑24/7 availability, performance, and greater agility.
Reckon migrated key services to AWS using a week‑long lift-and-shift and now runs workloads with CloudFormation, Amazon EC2/EBS, Auto Scaling, Elastic Load Balancing, Elastic Beanstalk, and CloudWatch. The move lets Reckon scale session hosts from 40 overnight to about 330 at peak, rapidly deploy updates, expand Reckon One into the UK, and improve monitoring and team proficiency. Results include drastically reduced infrastructure overhead, more frequent feature releases, and strong reliability—achieving up to 99.999% availability—along with better operational visibility and faster time to market.
