A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Rangespan is an automated supply-chain service that helps online retailers massively expand product selection without risk, serving more than 200 UK retailers and suppliers (including Argos, Tesco, and ASDA). Facing seasonal spikes and rapid international growth, the company needed to keep inventory and price data fresh for over 15 million products, run ML/NLP to predict demand, and scale globally without heavy investment in physical infrastructure.
Rangespan built its platform entirely on AWS—using Amazon EMR for catalog processing and ML, EC2 (including Spot Instances), RDS, S3, CloudFront, SQS, SES, and tuned EBS-backed databases—to enable rapid experimentation and continuous deployment. The result: support for 5,000+ transactions per second, a 400M-record (2 TB) catalog, 400% year-over-year traffic growth, 15 daily releases, and estimated data-center savings of $800K–$1M plus ~80% cost reduction from Spot Instances.
