Case Study: PIXNET scales photo processing to 10 million images per day and cuts costs with Amazon Web Services

PIXNET - Customer Case Study

PIXNET is a Taiwan‑based social network, online photo gallery, and blog provider with a large user base in Greater China (ranked eighth in Taiwan by traffic). While operating primary services from physical data centers in Taiwan, PIXNET needed a cost‑effective, scalable way to add a new face‑detection and recognition feature and handle massive photo processing without buying more hardware, so it evaluated cloud options for East Asia and chose AWS.

PIXNET integrated Amazon S3 for logs and backups, deployed about 50 Amazon EC2 instances in the Asia Pacific region to process roughly 10 million photos per day via a RESTful API linked to its data center, and adopted Amazon SES for reliable email delivery. The AWS addition improved agility, reduced costs, sped product delivery, increased customer satisfaction, and enabled further plans like using the AWS SDK for PHP and exploring Elastic MapReduce for large‑scale processing.
