Pinsight Media, a Kansas City–based mobile data and insights company, collects and analyzes more than 80 TB of anonymized carrier data daily to deliver customer modeling, brand-affinity, and market-analysis products. When a client asked Pinsight to process a six‑month, 900 TB backlog within eight days—a job requiring roughly 100,000 compute hours—its on‑premises data management platform couldn’t meet the deadline without consuming months of capacity.

Pinsight moved sanitized data to AWS (Amazon S3 and EBS), ran processing pipelines on Amazon EMR and EC2 (using Spot Instances), and replayed its existing workflows in the cloud. The result: an eightfold increase in capacity and throughput, 100,000 compute hours executed in eight days, controlled costs through Spot pricing and price ceilings, and on‑time delivery that preserved margins and satisfied the customer.
