A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Portland General Electric (PGE) faced the challenge of keeping digital services reliable during severe weather and outage-related traffic spikes while also improving operational analytics. By moving to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and using services like Amazon S3, Amazon SageMaker, and a Snowflake-powered data lake, PGE gained the elasticity, scalability, and resiliency needed to better serve customers.
Amazon Web Services helped PGE scale its APIs to handle five times the traffic at 25% faster rates than on-premises systems, while most APIs now respond in under a second. AWS also enabled PGE to support about 200,000 outage reports in a six-hour window without crashing, significantly improve energy loss detection accuracy, and build a pole-inspection algorithm that identifies defects with 80% accuracy.
