A Amazon Web Services Case Study
PetaJakarta is an applied research platform that aggregates real‑time, location‑based flood reports and sensor data to help Jakarta’s 28 million residents and emergency responders monitor urban flooding. The project needed immediate, accurate access to time‑critical flood information anywhere, the ability to scale during emergency peaks, and secure channels for organizations to submit data.
The team deployed AWS services—Elastic Beanstalk, Amazon RDS, EC2, AWS IoT, Elastic Load Balancing, Auto Scaling, and Route 53—to collect social media and sensor data, manage field devices, and reliably deliver maps and alerts. The solution provided automated failover and on‑demand scaling so the site stayed available during the 2015–2016 monsoon (23,000 users, 3,500 social reports, and 1.6 million Twitter impressions), reduced idle infrastructure costs, and enabled secure device connections for continued sensor expansion.
