A Amazon Web Services Case Study
PayGate, a leading online payment processor in southern Africa serving customers like Yuppiechef, DHL and MTN, needed to launch a payment gateway hosted in the European Union to meet a new client’s regulatory and operational requirements. The company’s challenge was to replicate its existing South African infrastructure quickly, avoid large capital expenditure and data-center contracts, and ensure full PCI compliance for card payments.
PayGate chose AWS, running a low-cost proof of concept and then deploying a production stack using Amazon EC2, Elastic Load Balancing and Amazon RDS across multiple Availability Zones, with CloudFormation for reproducible test environments. The move saved roughly 1 million ZAR (~US$75,000) in hardware, support and travel costs, simplified PCI compliance through AWS attestations, and delivered immediate scalability (for example, resizing an RDS instance in minutes), giving PayGate greater agility and a template to offer cloud gateways to other clients.
