Ottawa Hospital Research Institute Puts Immunizations in the Cloud Using AWS

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, the research arm of one of Canada’s largest teaching hospitals, faced a national public‑health challenge: fragmented immunization records, rising vaccine hesitancy, and inconsistent provincial practices that left many people under‑vaccinated. The team also needed a solution that protected hundreds of thousands of Canadians’ personal health information and kept data physically in Canada to meet strict privacy requirements.

They developed CANImmunize, a bilingual mobile/web app hosted in the Canadian AWS region that centralizes immunization records, delivers reminders, outbreak alerts, travel and pregnancy guidance, and engaging educational content. Built with scalable AWS services and secured with multilayer protections in partnership with iSecurity, the platform has grown to more than 200,000 users and is positioned to boost vaccination coverage while staying cost‑effective for grant‑funded research.
