A Amazon Web Services Case Study
OpenEye Scientific, a developer of computational drug-discovery software used by companies such as Pfizer and Merck, faced customers’ need for massive but bursty compute, costly on‑premises HPC management, and inefficient chemical-data sharing. With fewer scientific developers at life-science organizations and limited in‑house resources, pharmaceutical teams struggled to scale simulations, collaborate, and move drug research forward quickly.
OpenEye built Orion, a cloud‑native SaaS on AWS (using Amazon EC2, Auto Scaling, EC2 Spot Instances, IAM, and CloudFormation) to deliver browser-based access to scalable compute. As a result, customers can deploy 100,000 cores in days instead of months, OpenEye saved about $800,000 annually by using Spot Instances, and pharmaceutical teams now accelerate R&D, simplify secure data sharing, and offload platform management to AWS.
