A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Onoko is a Hong Kong–based app developer that builds social and mobile apps (mainly for Facebook and iPhone), supporting roughly 15 million users worldwide with just four full-time developers. After using various cloud services and struggling to find a single provider that offered both flexibility and an economical price point, the company turned to Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Onoko moved its entire application stack to AWS—using EC2 for authentication and back-end services, SimpleDB for scalable non-relational storage, and S3 with CloudFront for Flash hosting and delivery—and saw immediate improvements in performance and scalability. The switch cut operating costs by more than 50%, kept S3/CloudFront costs below 1% of revenue, sustained about 1 million daily users (and handled spikes of up to 5 million additional users a day), and freed the small team to focus on building apps rather than managing infrastructure.
