A Amazon Web Services Case Study
Okta, a San Francisco–based provider of identity and access management that integrates with existing directories and over 4,000 applications, needed a simpler way to run containerized applications. The company had been using an internal deployment tool and Docker Compose but wanted a container-management solution with a low learning curve that wouldn’t distract engineering teams from building and running Okta’s services.
Okta adopted Amazon EC2 Container Service (ECS), mapping existing IAM and network policies to ECS and using the service to run automated builds, tests, and microservices. As a managed service, ECS simplified operations with automatic health checks, restarts, scaling, and task-level IAM, reduced operational costs and paging, enabled non-ops teams to deploy safely, and shortened time to production from weeks to days.
