A Amazon Web Services Case Study
New York University Langone Medical Center’s High Performance Computing Facility supports medical informatics and bioinformatics researchers by storing, curating and analyzing massive datasets from next‑generation sequencers, microscopes and mass spectrometers. The facility struggled with long-running analysis jobs that sometimes required more compute than available onsite and, critically, with slow, unreliable data transfers to collaborators around the world — often taking longer to move data than to generate it.
To solve this, the center adopted Amazon EC2 and S3 with Globus Online for high‑speed, parallel transfers (up to about 50 MB/s), avoiding firewall issues and slow SCP workflows. The cloud solution provided elastic compute, easy data movement to S3, faster analysis turnarounds, and simple worldwide data sharing — expanding services for NYU researchers and enabling scalable, cost‑effective collaboration beyond local infrastructure.
