National Geographic Speeds Innovation with Serverless Computing on AWS

National Geographic Partners (NGP), the media joint venture behind National Geographic’s magazines, TV channels and vast digital presence, needed to make 130 years of multimedia content discoverable across channels. Faced with enormous volumes of assets spread across multiple CMSs and insufficient image metadata, the company couldn’t manually tag its archives—it would have been prohibitively slow and costly.

NGP built a mobile-native app on AWS using serverless technologies (AWS Lambda, Amazon S3, Amazon Rekognition, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon CloudSearch, and Amazon SNS) to automate image tagging, processing, indexing, personalization, and notifications. The serverless approach sped development by months, avoided the expense of manual tagging, met tight deadlines, and made the archive instantly searchable and more agile for future innovation.
