Migrating Critical ERP Workloads to AWS Using SAP on AWS with 3M Company

3M Company began migrating its critical ERP and SAP environments to Amazon Web Services in 2020, aiming to move the largest part of its infrastructure early while minimizing disruption. Working with AWS Professional Services and AWS Partners, 3M faced the challenge of migrating thousands of servers and hundreds of terabytes of ERP data during a period of intense operational demand, including COVID-19 manufacturing efforts.

Amazon Web Services helped 3M implement SAP on AWS with a carefully tested migration approach, multiple Availability Zones, and cloud-based compute scaling through Amazon EC2. The ERP cutover was completed in less than 20 hours, the full SAP migration finished in 15 months, and 3M saved millions of dollars by rightsizing resources and optimizing storage. With AWS, 3M also improved resiliency, flexibility, and performance while reducing hardware dependency and operational burden.
