A Amazon Web Services Case Study
MAPFRE, Spain’s largest insurer with operations in 40 countries, needed to supplement its three data centers to reduce costly travel, meet new EU solvency requirements, and speed up development and testing. Its on-premises approach forced IT teams to spend months on-site for installations, required reserving high-performance servers for occasional monthly solvency checks, and took up to two weeks to create development environments.
MAPFRE moved core workloads to AWS (EC2, S3, VPC) and built a web console so any authorized developer can launch preconfigured environments in seconds, and it runs solvency computations on blurred customer data over secure VPNs to scalable EC2/PIOPS EBS clusters. The implementation took about half a day and delivered major savings and flexibility: €1 million saved by avoiding a dedicated server for solvency checks, total three‑year infrastructure costs fell from €1.5M to €180k (88% savings), installation costs dropped from €30–150k to €1.2–5k, and travel and deployment time were dramatically reduced.
